After sitting around for 4 hours they told us to report back at 1:30. I did. Come 3:00 they told us that the trial got moved to 10:30 tomorrow morning. The day was wasted.

Wasted? No way! You got your sweet jury duty pay, right? Something like $20?

Welcome to any court system, anywhere in the US and probably anywhere in the world. Everything operates on the judge's schedule and if it's inconvenient for anyone else, too damn bad. Be glad you don't have to deal with courts as part of your job.

19 but I still had to pay for parking and lunch and the gas to drive down there and I missed a day of work.

That sounds typical.

After one of our VPs got stuck on jury duty for a month plus he pushed a policy change through so we could bill it to overhead. Of course, since then, not a single person has been called in in a year plus...I think the courts realized that and decided to target the people for whom it would be the most inconvenient.

LOL. Next time just yell "nullify". Then you get to leave. Maybe. Or go to jail. Which would mean you still get to leave.

I disagree with that generalization. Much of my days are spent either in court before judges or in communication with their offices and staff. For the most part, judges are quite flexible and understanding of people's schedules, especially jurors. The last thing a judge wants is a jury that is frustrated, bored or (worst of all) angry before trial even starts and which may then impact their decision making. I would bet better than 50/50 odds that the reason the jury selection process for this trial has taken longer than expected is either: (1) last minute pre-trial motions by the attorneys and for which they did not properly inform the court of the time needed for oral argument, or (2) pre-trial settlement negotiations in an attempt to avoid trial at all.

I will admit it was unfair to blame it all on the judges, even in general terms. The lawyers and their behind the scenes machinations are probably far more often at fault.

Seriously, if they ever ask you what jury nullification is, just proclaim "YEP, AND I'LL USE IT EVERY CHANCE I GET!"

Booted immediately.

Here in Canada they are very very limited as to what they can ask the juror. They usually don't ask that. However randomly yelling "nullify" may help get you out. I talked to a defense attorney here, and he said in the selection process he told the potential juror and watched their facial expressions and that's it.
